Vietnam veterans Art Johnson and Jim Rickard dedicated years of service to their country, and now, thanks to Rebuilding Together Platte Valley East and the Home Depot Foundation, the Fremont community is giving back. Volunteers gathered to make critical repairs and renovations to both veterans’ homes, ensuring they can continue living comfortably and safely in the years to come.
Johnson’s home received extensive renovations, including fresh paint, interior updates, and a rebuilt front deck, which was previously difficult for him to access. After nearly 50 years of living in the same house, Johnson’s outdated space has been revitalized by Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit focused on providing essential home repairs for low-income homeowners, and the Home Depot Foundation, which supplied the materials and volunteers.
Just a few blocks away, retired Marine and Vietnam veteran Jim Rickard was surprised with home improvements organized by his daughter, Julie Anderson. Volunteers repainted, landscaped, and updated areas of Rickard’s home, making it safer and more accessible for him. Anderson explained that she kept the project a surprise to prevent her father from attempting the repairs himself.
The dedication of the volunteers who made these transformations possible is a testament to the Fremont community’s appreciation for its veterans. These renovations not only serve as a thank-you but also help these veterans maintain their independence by allowing them to stay in their homes.
