Bladder cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in America. As the name implies, this cancer affects the bladder and urinary system, especially the walls lining the bladder. Cancer of any kind is simply the uncontrolled reproduction of cells. When these cells begin to clump together, tumors begin to form, and the necessary function of the affected organ becomes impaired. Tumors can spread from one organ to the next, causing serious health problems for patients.

Veterans who were at Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune or Marine Corps Air Station New River from August 1953 to December 1987 were likely exposed to contaminated drinking water. The water at the base contained a variety of toxic chemicals due to incorrect disposal practices by an off-base dry cleaner.
The chemicals in the water have led to a wide array of illnesses and disabilities among Veterans. A common disability that arose as a result of the exposure is bladder cancer. Veterans who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer and were stationed at Camp Lejeune are eligible for disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In fact, the VA gives presumptive service connection for Veterans who drank the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune and later developed bladder cancer. This means that you do not have to prove your bladder cancer was caused by the water at the base. You just need to prove that you served at the base during the specific timeframe listed above and you have a current diagnosis of bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer can affect anyone, and it often comes a surprise. Bladder cancer can, however, be traced back to a certain activity or event in a person’s life. Many people know that although smoking does not always lead to lung cancer, it does cause it quite often. Bladder cancer is similar in that aspect. Some events may make it more likely to get bladder cancer, but they do not guarantee that bladder cancer will develop.
Some events or exposure to substances can lead to bladder cancer. Exposure to toxic chemicals, such as toxic drinking water at Camp Lejeune, can cause bladder cancer.
Symptoms of bladder cancer can be anything that seems off with your urine. Some of the more common symptoms include blood in the urine, painful urination, or pelvic pain. Victims of bladder cancer may also experience back pain or frequent urination (once or more per hour, 5 or more times per night).
