Navigating the process that is the VA is very daunting and it’s very overwhelming. I got as far as I could in fighting that fight. I was investing the time and emotion of constantly reliving why I was messed up and why I was broken, and how I wasn’t whole. It was constantly in my face which didn’t allow me to be a good father. It didn’t allow me to be a good husband. It didn’t allow me to be a good employee, an employer.
I think that there is a stigma specifically for guys and gals that do have a problem. They do have an issue. But veteran services, VA services are not for them. I’m okay. I’ll get by. It’s okay for me to not be okay, but it’s not okay to stay that way. It’s not okay to be in that spot forever. You loan your body, your soul, you’re person to the government for eight and a half years, and it’s not the same. They can’t replace you. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to expect that they should help try and take care of you.
Having the ability to go talk to a fellow veteran that will be able to represent me and has been where I’ve been, has literally walked the streets in Iraq that I walked and now is able to, to convey the message that I need to convey on my behalf is critical. So just like in the military, where when we go into a fight, we have our team behind us. We have the people who are specialists in that various areas of the fight. This fight in our lives is no different. We have to have a team that knows how to help us best in this next fight of our life.
