The United Way Veterans Helpline is now available to provide free, confidential assistance to Veterans, service members, and their families in Nebraska and Iowa. This new initiative, a collaboration between the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs, Offutt Air Force Base, and United Way of the Midlands, connects military families with essential resources tailored to their unique needs.
A Lifeline for Veterans and Military Families
The United Way Veterans Helpline is an extension of United Way’s existing 211 service. It offers specialized support to help military families address challenges such as child care, housing, financial assistance, employment, and food security. John Hilgert, director of the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs, explained the importance of the service: “We want to make sure they’re connected to the resources they need, so everything is running smoothly.”
A Partnership Built on Support
Shawna Forsberge, president and CEO of United Way of the Midlands, emphasized the unique collaboration behind the helpline: “This is truly a public-private partnership where we combine what United Way 211 does best with the expertise of Offutt Air Force Base and the VA to provide comprehensive support.” The helpline strengthens the network of assistance available to Veterans and service members, ensuring they have access to 24/7 live support via phone, online, or email.
Comprehensive Assistance Across Nebraska and Iowa
The helpline is designed to help service members focus on their mission, knowing their families have the support they need. From finding housing to securing employment, this helpline ensures that military families and Veterans can access vital resources wherever they are in Nebraska or Iowa.
