Patriotism was on full display in Riverside Lakes as residents held a heartfelt ceremony and parade in honor of veterans and fallen heroes. Known as the Riverside Lakes Patriotism Parade, this first-ever event brought together neighbors to celebrate the freedoms we cherish, thanks to the sacrifices of those who served. Organized by Jim Meier, director of the Honor and Remember Nebraska chapter, the event aimed to keep the memories of veterans alive in the community.
A Tribute to Sacrifice
As Meier highlighted, freedoms such as speech, religion, and assembly wouldn’t be possible without the sacrifices of our veterans. Living at Riverside Lakes himself, Meier felt a strong connection to the neighborhood and believed this parade would allow residents to pay tribute collectively in a way they couldn’t individually. The Riverside Lakes Patriotism Parade was a chance for the community to honor those who served, including their own late neighbor, Vietnam War veteran Daniel Zitek, who passed away in 2011 after a battle with cancer.
Honoring Veterans with Yard Signs
One of the most touching elements of the Riverside Lakes Patriotism Parade was the yard signs displayed throughout the neighborhood. These signs featured photos of veterans alongside the American flag and the Honor and Remember flag, a tribute to each service member’s branch. Linda, Daniel Zitek’s wife, was especially moved, saying the signs evoked memories of pride and pain, honoring her late husband’s service.
Celebrating Community and Freedom
After paying tribute to veterans, the parade transitioned to a traditional Fourth of July celebration, filled with food, fun, and camaraderie. For many residents, the event captured the spirit of a close-knit community, reminiscent of the 1940s and 50s when neighbors looked out for one another.
Meier hopes to make the Riverside Lakes Patriotism Parade an annual tradition, ensuring that Riverside Lakes remains a community that honors its veterans and values freedom.
