“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time,” wrote Thomas Merton, capturing a sentiment that resonates deeply with veterans across Nebraska and Iowa. Many veterans have found solace and community through their passion for art, rekindling a sense of camaraderie reminiscent of their military service. This mission, driven by creativity and healing, is embodied by the New Century Art Guild, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans through artistic expression.
Albert Rhea’s Journey in Art and Community
For veteran Albert Rhea, art is more than just a hobby; it’s a therapeutic journey. His love for photography and sculpting led him to connect with a community of like-minded veterans. Rhea shares, “Photography is absolutely therapeutic for me.” Whether capturing cardinals in his backyard or showcasing sculptures in cities like Sioux Falls and Liberty, his work illustrates the power of art to bring peace and purpose to those who have served.
A Vision for Veterans
The New Century Art Guild was founded in 2004 by Troy Muller, a local artist and college instructor. Muller, while teaching at Iowa Western, encouraged a veteran student to reflect on his military experiences through art, an exercise that ultimately alleviated 35 years of recurring nightmares. This profound transformation spurred Muller to expand his vision, creating a space where countless veterans could heal and find fulfillment. “This was magical to me,” Muller reflects. “It’s still magical to this day to see the transformation that happens when veterans and art get together.”
A Platform for Creativity and Connection
Over the years, the Guild has grown, serving hundreds—and perhaps thousands—of veterans and their families. Veterans like Erin Colson, who rediscovered his love for photography under Muller’s guidance, have found newfound purpose and even professional opportunities through the Guild. Navy veteran Ty Andrews has earned national recognition for his work, but for many, the Guild’s workshops, exhibitions, and creative projects offer something far more significant than professional success. “There’s nothing else like it,” Colson explains. “To be able to be creative and let that be your outlet—it’s irreplaceable.”
A Movement Spreading Nationwide
What began as a classroom experience 20 years ago has blossomed into a thriving network of veteran artists. The Guild recently expanded to Texas and will soon establish a chapter in Chicago, each fostering a supportive environment where veterans can explore their creativity and find healing.
