Marine Veteran’s 500-Mile Promise: A Journey of Determination and Hope

Marine Veteran’s 500-Mile Promise: A Journey of Determination and Hope

Three years ago, Marine Veteran James Hickey made a heartfelt commitment known as the Marine Veteran’s 500-Mile Promise. After learning about an eight-year-old girl named Patient from Cozad, Nebraska, who was battling both brain and spinal cancer, Hickey vowed to walk nearly 500 miles—the entire length of Nebraska—to raise awareness for pediatric cancer and support her courageous fight.

A Journey Marked by Challenges

Hickey began his journey in Scottsbluff in 2021, determined to fulfill his promise. However, as he progressed, he faced an unexpected challenge of his own. “I just started getting weaker and weaker on the road,” Hickey recalled. Medical evaluations at VA clinics in North Platte and Kearney revealed a diagnosis of bladder cancer. His health compelled him to suspend the walk in Aurora, but he remained resolute, promising Patient that he would return to complete the journey.

Overcoming Personal Battles to Keep a Promise

After undergoing five surgeries and the removal of his left kidney, Hickey was ready to resume his mission. “February 26th, I decided that, hey, it’s time,” he said. “Two years, three months, and five cancer surgeries later, I’m fulfilling my promise to that little girl and finishing her walk.”

The Final Mile Together

On a Saturday morning, Hickey and Patient walked the last mile together, culminating their journey at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, where Patient continues her treatment. Her mother expressed profound gratitude: “I’m very grateful for him and what he’s doing for pediatric cancer and raising awareness and telling our story because it was a long journey with, you know, having a child with cancer.”

A Story of Determination and Inspiration

Completing the Marine Veteran’s 500-Mile Promise was a significant achievement for Hickey. “It’s just a feeling of, number one, that I kept my promise to her,” he shared. “I did exactly what I said I was going to do.” Despite his ongoing battle with bladder cancer, for which he will continue treatment over the next three years, Hickey’s dedication serves as an inspiring testament to perseverance and the power of keeping one’s word.
