Local teen Kate Martin has been recognized as a semi-finalist for the prestigious Military Child of the Year Award, highlighting her resilience and positive influence in the community.
Kate Martin, a senior at Platteview, has moved eight times due to her father’s military service in the U.S. Navy. Despite these challenges, she has embraced the experiences, stating, “Being a military child is not for the weak, but it has made me who I am today.”
Out of 900 applicants, Kate stands among the 105 semi-finalists for the Military Child of the Year Award, an honor that acknowledges military children for their resilience and community impact. “It’s not even that I win, it’s just that I’ve been recognized for all that I’ve done in my high school experience and that’s a really good honor for me,” she expressed.
Kate is actively involved in various school activities, including band, theater, and yearbook, all while recovering from three back surgeries. Her dedication extends beyond school, as she supports her family during her father’s deployments.
Her father, John Martin, expressed immense pride in Kate’s accomplishments, saying, “She’s an awesome kid. Her mom and I are so proud of her. Everything she’s been able to accomplish and everything she has been through.”
As Kate Martin continues her senior year, she looks forward to spending time with family and friends. The seven award recipients, each representing a branch of the military, will be announced in March.
Kate Martin’s journey as a Military Child of the Year semi-finalist is a testament to her resilience and positive impact, inspiring others in her community and beyond.
