Community of Hope: A Haven for Veterans in Bellevue

In Bellevue, Nebraska, a plot of land near 36th and Capehart is set to transform into the Community of Hope—a sanctuary for veterans and their families. Spearheaded by the 50 Mile March Foundation, this project will provide centralized resources, services, and camaraderie for those who have served our country.

The Community of Hope: A Vision for Veterans

Jay Miralles, co-founder of the foundation and a veteran himself, envisions the Community of Hope as a place where veterans can feel at home and access vital support.

“I wanted a centralized function, coordinated services where I could show up, meet other people, and be with those who were like me,” Miralles explained.

What began as a march from Lincoln to Omaha to raise awareness for veterans’ issues has now grown into a project that aims to tackle homelessness and mental health challenges among veterans.

Why Sarpy County?

Sarpy County was chosen for the Community of Hope because of its strong veteran presence and support network.

“We have such a beautiful veteran community here,” said Brianne Schuler, Executive Director of the foundation. “We know there’s a huge swelling of support, but there’s also a need.”

With camaraderie as the backbone of military life, the campus will offer a similar spirit of belonging and connection to its residents.

Looking Ahead for the Community of Hope

The Community of Hope is scheduled for completion in 2027. Once built, it will provide a hub for veterans to find resources, forge relationships, and experience a renewed sense of purpose.

“It’s almost unbelievable to think that we’ve gone from where we started to this place where we can provide for our brothers and sisters who need this most,” Miralles shared.
