Clarinda Veterans Boulevard Banners: Honoring Local Heroes and Military Service

In Clarinda, Iowa, the community’s pride in its military heritage is now on display along its historic boulevard with the Clarinda Veterans Boulevard Banners. Thanks to the efforts of local resident Colleen Strong, 105 veterans are honored on banners lining the street, a project designed to recognize their service and sacrifices.

A Tribute to Service

This Clarinda Veterans Boulevard Banners initiative began with a vision from Colleen Strong, a self-described military “brat” who wanted to show appreciation for the veterans in Clarinda. Initially aiming for around 50 banners, the community’s overwhelming support doubled that number, with banners now honoring veterans from various conflicts and eras. Denise Jago’s husband, Anthony, a Navy veteran who reenlisted with the National Guard after 9/11, is among those honored. “When this country was attacked, I felt like I needed to stand back,” he shared, reflecting the spirit of dedication represented by the banners.

Recognizing Vietnam Veterans

Vietnam veteran Duane Meyer, who returned from service in 1968, described the isolation many felt when coming home. “We put on our work clothes and went back to work,” he said, recalling how few words of welcome were extended to returning soldiers. Meyer, who earned four Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, found healing years later on an honor flight to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. “I looked into the wall…the names, faces came out,” he recounted, highlighting the deep connection he felt to his fallen comrades.

A Community United in Gratitude

The Clarinda Veterans Boulevard Banners project has resonated with veterans like Keith Kearney, who received his banner thanks to an anonymous donor. Reflecting on his service, he shared, “It was an honor to be in the service…you say it when you get out because you know what you had to do.” For the veterans of Clarinda, this display of respect is a powerful reminder of their community’s appreciation.

With a boulevard now lined with banners of local heroes, Clarinda, Iowa, stands as a proud example of honoring military service and the veterans who have given so much.
