99-Year-Old WWII Veteran Honored for His Service in Nebraska

Gilbert “Gil” Hill, a 99-year-old World War II Veteran, was recently recognized for his service during a heartfelt ceremony in Omaha. As part of an initiative to honor Nebraska’s living WWII Veterans, Governor Jim Pillen presented Hill with a medal of recognition for his role in the war.

A Lifetime of Service and Sacrifice

At just 18 years old, Hill enlisted in the U.S. Navy, joining the fight during one of the most pivotal moments in history. His service took him to the Philippines aboard the ship Manderson Victory, where he contributed to military operations in the Pacific.

Now, nearly eight decades later, Hill reflected on the honor, saying, “It feels great to be honored. It brings back a lot of memories, of course…it was all worth it.”

For Hill, the recognition was a reminder of the sacrifices made by his fellow servicemen and women who answered the call to defend freedom.

Honoring Nebraska’s WWII Veterans

Governor Pillen’s visit to Hill was part of a statewide initiative to honor all World War II Veterans living in Nebraska. The goal of the World War II Veteran Recognition Program is to acknowledge the bravery and dedication of the few remaining members of what’s referred to as the Greatest Generation.

These Veterans played a crucial role in shaping history, and this program seeks to give them the gratitude and recognition they deserve.

The Importance of Remembering WWII Veterans

As the number of WWII Veterans continues to decline, it is essential to preserve their stories and honor their contributions. These individuals demonstrated unparalleled courage, fighting for a future of freedom and democracy.

Honoring their service:

  • Preserves history for future generations.
  • Recognizes their lifelong impact on the country.
  • Expresses gratitude for their sacrifices.

Programs like Governor Pillen’s initiative offer meaningful recognition for Veterans like Hill, honoring their contributions and helping to keep their legacy alive.

A Well-Deserved Honor

Gilbert Hill’s service and sacrifice represent the spirit of the Greatest Generation. Recognizing WWII Veterans while they are still with us serves as a powerful reminder of the debt of gratitude owed to those who fought for freedom.
