Every day is a great day on the golf course for a group of Nebraska veterans, but next week will be particularly special as they prepare to open the 2024 PGA Championships at Valhalla Golf Course. These veterans, part of the PGA HOPE program, will showcase their skills in a nine-hole scramble as they compete for the Secretary’s Cup, a national event that introduces veterans to the game of golf and fosters camaraderie and community.
A Life-Changing Program for Veterans
The PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Nebraska chapter provides a six-week program that pairs 25 veterans with PGA professionals, offering them not only golf lessons but also a supportive community. This year, the Nebraska chapter will graduate over 220 veterans, adding to the growing list of alumni who find golf to be more than a sport—it’s a way to reconnect with fellow veterans and find a renewed sense of purpose.
A Round Dedicated to Fallen Heroes
Each player will dedicate their round at the tournament to a fallen hero. PGA professional Mike Antonio, one of the veterans participating, will honor Corporal Daegan Page, whose family joined him on the course ahead of the championship. This meaningful tribute underscores the sense of purpose and remembrance that drives the program.
An Invitation to Veterans
The veterans in the program encourage others to join and experience the life-changing impact of PGA HOPE. Through golf, veterans find a supportive network, an escape from daily struggles, and a place where they truly belong.
