How Long Does the VA Appeals Process Take Transcript
Generally, appeals take 18 to 24 months, but this depends on several factors such as the complexity of the claim and also which regional office. The regional offices don’t work on the same timelines—some regional offices work quickly, some are much slower.
Sometimes, what we find is when our clients want the case resolved immediately, we have to respond: no—you want it resolved right the first time. Because even if it takes those 18 to 24 months, if the case is not decided the correct way in accordance with the law, then the Veteran has the opportunity to appeal.
The bad news is that appeal is going to take additional time. So, when we talk about how long an appeal takes, 18 to 24 months is a great answer—it’s a great starting point. But how many times is the Veteran going to have to appeal? I think sometimes is the better question.
If we stick with a time frame of 18 to 24 months, we have a point of reference but not a solid standard.
